LC-Tec Displays AB (LC-Tec) and Seiko Instruments Inc. (SII) have signed a LETTER OF INTENT (LOI) to do joint development of high-speed liquid crystal device for stereoscopic 3D applications. LC-Tec's fast switching technology and SII’s production strengths are combined to develop this technology. Potential applications include shutter lenses in active 3D glasses and screen-sized polarization modulators to be placed in front of a display entailing the use of passive 3D glasses.
"We are very pleased to sign the LOI with such a world-leading producer of high quality LC-based displays as SII. Working together will accelerate the development and the commercialization of the high-speed technology for various 3D applications. Especially interesting is high-end, time-sequential 3D displays for which the technology significantly will enhance the display light efficiency and minimize the ghosting" says Peter Grufman, CEO at LC-TEC. "The LOI is a further endorsement of the high-speed liquid crystal technology and creates new opportunities for us and our customers."
"We are delighted to have the opportunity to do joint development based on LC-Tec's unique technology for 3D applications. We hope to make the best use of our process engineering and know-how to create products by a synergy for a promising potential market, in addition to our STN Display line-up.", said Kokichi Ito, Deputy General Manager, Takumi/Technical Module Division at SII.
The high-speed liquid crystal technology will be presented by LC-Tec at the IDW'10 (International Display Workshops) in Fukuoka, Japan, on December 2, 2010. Both parties plan to prepare full-scale, optimized prototypes for demonstration at the SID Display Week 49th International Symposium, Seminar, and Exhibition in Los Angeles, US, in May 15-20, 2011.
