Big BlockBig Block, a new digital production and design studio, has launched in Santa Monica. The venture is headed by business developer Scott Benson, executive producer Kenny Solomon and SWAY Studio founder and creative director Mark Glaser. The partners are backed by a significant institutional investor, which also provides for the launch of a software development group and pending expansion to New York to take advantage of production tax incentives.

Nautica WatchesNice Shoes has made a foray into re-branding with an in-store film and two spots for Timex that made their premier Baselworld 2011, the World Watch Jewelery Show in Switzerland. The New York-based creative post studio has been working direct-to-client over three months to help creatively reposition two of the watch giant’s brands, Nautica and Ecko Unlimited.

Each piece uses a mix of CG, motion graphics and live action to showcase the watches’ unique detailing and inner workings in a newly re-positioned context; Nautica retained its sporty lifestyle look but elevated with a sophisticated and timeless all-American feel, while Ecko Unlimited moved away from luxury glam to a sleek, hard-edged tech vibe.

Double-Digit Growth in Media Networks and Filmed Entertainment Revenues Drove a 37% Increase in Adjusted Operating Income

Viacom LogoViacom Inc. reported substantial increases in revenues and profit for the fiscal 2011 second quarter ended March 31, 2011, driven by strong growth across its Media Networks and Filmed Entertainment segments and improving profit margins. Revenues in the quarter increased 20% to $3.27 billion on double-digit growth in theatrical, advertising, home entertainment and television license revenues. Adjusted operating income grew 37% to $760 million, driven by increased profits in both Media Networks and Filmed Entertainment. Adjusted net earnings from continuing operations attributable to Viacom surged 69% to $430 million with adjusted diluted EPS from continuing operations of $0.72, a 71% improvement over the prior year's adjusted results of $0.42 per share.

Future of Driving

Digital production studio Digital Domain was tapped by RSA director Carl Erik Rinsch to help Dodge envision what the future holds for those who love to drive. Via ad agency Wieden + Kennedy Portland, the cinematic :60 spot "The Future of Driving" imagines a sci-fi universe where humans allow robots to brush our teeth and walk our dogs -- but refuse to hand over the keys to our cars. Digital Domain created this futuristic world, including its technologies, machines and cityscapes. The spot premiered online in mid-April.
